Young carers

Every day, one in twenty South Australians under 18 are looking after someone in the family with a physical or mental illness, a disability, a mental health issue, or an alcohol or drug problem.

Is this you?

Whether you’re the main carer in the family or helping someone else to do the caring, you give your time to help your parent, child, sibling or friend, simply because you care.

Young carers take on responsibilities like cooking meals, cleaning the house, looking after brothers and sisters, doing the shopping, paying bills, helping to give medication and helping with washing or getting dressed.

Caring can make you a stronger, more independent person but that can come at a cost.

The time and energy you need to be a carer can affect your own health, stop you studying, make it tough to get a job and upset your plans for the future.

It can also be harder to have fun with friends your own age.

Our Young Carers program can help you manage the pressures and responsibilities of your caring role.

  • We’re here to listen face-to-face or on the phone.
  • We’ll guide you through what support is available.
  • We’ll organise social activities and events with other young carers so you can recharge your batteries and have fun.

If you care for someone, we care for you

We support you in heaps of ways and put on activities for 5-9s, 10-13s and 14-17s.

Young Carers Centre

We have a dedicated space where you can drop in.

It's somewhere to take time out and access much-needed support, understanding and advice from our Young Carers team.

Have a chat, use the computer, have a drink, do course work - it'll soon be like your second home and the team will be like a second supportive family.

Someone to talk to

If you need to talk or get things off your chest, our team are here to listen face-to-face or on the phone.

They’ll guide you through what support is available and how to qualify for services at home.

And we’ll provide educational support and make sure school or uni understands how caring can affect studying.

Hanging out with other young carers

We put on social and recreational term-time and school holiday activities. We organise retreats and camps so you can recharge your batteries and have fun.

You’ll have a good time, make new friends and learn new skills.

Taking care of yourself

Looking after your own wellbeing is important, too.

We'll help you learn about coping with caring, finding a job, planning you own life and taking care of your own physical and mental health.

How much will it cost?

Our services are no cost thanks to state and federal government grants, and funds raised by our generous supporters.

How do I get support?

If you are between 5 and 18 and you care for someone and you live in south or east Adelaide it’s as easy as registering a few of your details with us.
