Plan for SA's Carer Gateway Regional Delivery Partners announced

South Australia will be divided into two service areas under the next phase of the federal governments’ new integrated system of supports and services to benefit unpaid carers.

Nationally there will be 16 Carer Gateway service areas under the new model including one for metropolitan Adelaide and one for all country SA.

The national online and telephone service, Carer Gateway, was launched in 2015 to make it easier for carers to find information, practical advice and services to support them in their caring role.

The next phase of the $85.6 million four year roll out includes establishing a regional and local presence across Australia.

Nationally there will be 16 Carer Gateway service areas under the new model including one for metropolitan Adelaide and one for all country SA.

From September 2019 Regional Delivery Partners will deliver and coordinate local and targeted services helping carers access a range of local services such as needs assessments, targeted financial support, information and advice, tailored phone and in-person peer support, counselling and coaching, and emergency respite.

Regional Delivery Partners will also conduct outreach activities, and link to social, health, education, community and cultural groups, to better understand regional needs. It is important to know that this new model will replace the current services funded by the Federal government and how they are provided.

Looking after a person with disability, mental illness, chronic condition, or an older person, can be stressful and can impact on the relationship between the carer and the person they care for.

The new services will be designed to help carers manage their daily challenges, reduce stress and plan for the future. They will help carers get the support they need before reaching crisis point.

The new model affects how Carer Support, and our partners in the Carer Support Network SA, provide some services to carers. Currently, Carer Support is analysing the new model in detail and will be looking at the selection process which starts in November 2019.

While the new Carer Gateway Regional Delivery Partners will start delivering services to carers from September 2019, Carer Support will continue to deliver some services to existing clients and we will ensure carers understand the changes and are supported to transition to the new service system at the end of next year.
