Carer and Community SA to wind down

 

Young Carers SA programs, the Young Carers Support Service and our volunteer led support for a small number of carer social groups will continue to operate until November, 2026.

We thank our clients, staff, volunteers, supporters and partners for their trust and support over many years.

Carer and Community SA was built on the belief that carers deserve to be recognised, valued and supported, and that commitment remains unchanged.

To maximise the long-term benefit of its financial reserves funds and continue the legacy established by our pioneering leader Pat Smytherman OAM, Carer and Community SA has gifted funds to ECH to broaden its established Caring for Carers program.

Both organisations have a long history of caring for those who care for others, have come together to continue a legacy of supporting carers of all ages across South Australia.

The expanded program will offer social connection, practical assistance, respite from the caring role, mentorship and valuable intergenerational experiences.

By bringing generations together, the program will help challenge stereotypes about ageing and caring, and demonstrate the importance of our elders remaining connected to younger people — where a lifetime of knowledge, wisdom and lived experience is passed on, and in return, younger generations offer fresh perspective, energy, understanding and connection to the future.

Partnering with research partners to evaluate program outcomes will be central to this work, building the evidence base needed to strengthen and progress the ongoing development of intergenerational practice — not only within ECH, but as a model other organisations across Australia can adopt.

In addition, the Board of Carer and Community SA determined to donate CCSA’s mini-bus to the HenderCare Foundation.

HenderCare Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children and young people living with disabilities, or those in the care of child protection services who are unable to live with their families.

The donation of the mini-bus will make a meaningful difference to the children and young people supported by the Foundation. It will provide greater opportunities for recreational outings, school holiday activities, life skills development and social connection, helping young people engage more fully in their communities, develop friendships and experience activities that might otherwise be difficult to access.
